Requirements

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate. No previous formal work experience is required, making this an ideal entry-level opportunity within the public healthcare sector. Candidates should have basic knowledge of portering procedures, relevant equipment, and the hospital environment.

Essential competencies include basic numeracy and literacy, good communication skills, sound human relations, and the ability to perform routine tasks efficiently and reliably. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with patients, staff, and other stakeholders are important.

Applicants must be able to work under pressure, function well within a team, and be willing to work shifts on a rotational basis, including providing a 24-hour service. The role is physically demanding and requires sustained physical effort. Compliance with legal requirements, including the consistent use of protective clothing, is compulsory.

An ABET Level 4 certificate, 0–2 years of relevant experience, and exposure to customer relations will be considered advantageous.


Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will provide continuous 24-hour portering services to support the hospital’s clinical operations. Key responsibilities include transporting patients safely between departments using stretchers and wheelchairs.

Porters will also assist with the transportation of deceased persons to the mortuary when required and as directed by management. Additional duties include ensuring emergency stretchers and wheelchairs are clean, prepared, and readily available, including dressing stretchers with clean linen.

Candidates will assist with loading and offloading patients from ambulances and private vehicles. All duties must be carried out under the supervision of the designated supervisor, with teamwork being essential in the fast-paced hospital environment.
