Job Purpose

The successful candidates will be responsible for performing cleaning and refuse-related operational duties. This role directly supports the City of Johannesburg’s mandate to maintain clean, healthy, and well-managed public spaces.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

General Workers will be expected to:

• Perform street cleaning and sweeping
• Clean refuse bins and designated public areas
• Collect, stack, and load refuse bags
• Deliver, replace, and remove refuse bins
• Conduct lane flushing and related cleaning activities
• Adhere strictly to health and safety procedures
• Wear prescribed protective clothing (PPE) at all times
• Report incidents, injuries, and faulty equipment
• Engage respectfully with community members when required

Required Competencies & Skills

Applicants should demonstrate:

• Ability to follow instructions accurately
• Ability to work independently and within a team
• Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and safety procedures
• Good verbal communication skills
• Ability to complete tasks efficiently and responsibly

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must:

• Have a Grade 10 qualification
• Possess a minimum of 12 months’ cleaning or general work experience
• Have no criminal record
• Be physically and mentally fit to perform manual labour
• Be a South African citizen
• Reside within the City of Johannesburg (proof of residence required)
