Programme Overview
Transnet is inviting unemployed individuals to apply for its Train Assistant Trainee Programme 2026.
This programme is designed to equip trainees with the necessary skills, knowledge, and practical experience to support safe and efficient train operations.
Trainees will assist the Train Driver in operating various types of trains and locomotive consists, including:
- Airbrake trains
- Vacuum trains
- High-speed trains
- Heavy haul trains
- Passenger trains
The goal is to ensure freight and cargo reach their destination safely, on time, and in good condition.
Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Shift & Locomotive Preparation
- Sign on duty and receive shift allocation
- Determine which locomotive must be prepared
- Obtain and place required equipment on the locomotive
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment
- Clean working area
- Assist with starting up locomotives
- Assist with locomotive brake tests
- Couple and dispatch locomotive
Communication Equipment Preparation
- Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters
- Check functionality of communication equipment
Pre-Trip Train Preparation
- Attach/detach vehicles (if no guard personnel available)
- Mount telemeters where required
- Complete vehicle list and vacuum form
- Mount train indicators
- Examine train
- Conduct brake tests with Train Driver
Shunting & Operational Duties
- Obtain works order
- Perform shunting activities (placing/removing trucks)
- Update vehicle list
- Place and clear trucks at sidings
Enroute Support
- Compare signal positions with Train Driver
- Observe trains and patrol locomotives
- Reset locomotive trip-outs
- Monitor safe running of train
- Protect train during incidents
- Assist during emergencies
- Provide feedback on incidents or route deviations
Administration
- Complete train journal
- Submit documentation to Section Manager after each shift
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science
- Minimum age: 21 years
- Minimum height: 1.6 metres
- Must pass:
- Medical fitness assessments (hearing, vision, mental fitness)
- Safety behavioral risk assessments
- Psychomotor ability test (Vienna Testing System – VTS)
- Must be physically fit and able to carry heavy objects
- Willing to undergo theoretical and practical training
- Must obtain Train Assistant certification to work independently
